Sometimes, international emergencies with family can require a person to need to go abroad without much notice. On the other hand, vacationers who have cruises planned may not have known in advance that they needed passports to visit some of the islands. The sections below explain how applicants can navigate these circumstances and apply for a passport with ease.

How is the Vermont Passport Agency different from a passport office?

It is important that applicants remember that a US passport agency is not the same facility as a passport office. Both of these locations have the capacity to accept individuals’ passport applications. However, there are more restrictions regarding who can apply at the agency versus who can apply at the office.

If you are a first-time adult or child applicant, you can submit your request at a US passport office. However, you must have travel plans that are coming up within the next month in order to apply at a passport agency. In fact, you may only apply at an agency if you need a visa within the next four weeks or a passport within the next two. Furthermore, you should note that you are required to make an appointment at the agency before you come to that location to apply. This differs from the passport office, where individual facilities decide for themselves if you need to make an appointment before you stop by to apply.

How do I schedule an appointment at a US passport agency?

Regardless of which US passport agency you want to visit, there are two ways you can schedule an appointment, as outlined below:

  • By phone. You have the option of calling the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) to schedule your appointment. This is a quick, efficient way for you to arrange your meeting time with a State Department representative.
  • Online. If you want to schedule your passport agency appointment online, you can do so by utilizing the Online Passport Appointment System.
