Should I apply at the passport office or agency?

Most applicants should first learn if they need to apply for a US passport at an agency or office facility. This may seem like a confusing choice to make, but, in reality, it is simple to know which federal location you need to apply at. This distinction is usually based on how quickly applicants need their passport card or book. If individuals have immediate travel plans that will take them abroad within the next four weeks, they need to apply at a US passport agency. However, some requesters have more flexibility regarding their travel schedules. Therefore, individuals who will be leaving more than a month from the date they plan to apply may submit their requests at one of several passport office locations around the country.

What do I need to do to schedule a passport agency appointment?

If you want to request an expedited passport through a government agency, you must schedule an appointment at the facility before you can do so. There are two ways that you can schedule an appointment at a US passport agency. These methods are valid whether you apply at the facility in Detroit or one in another part of the country. If you have access to a secure internet connection, you may request an appointment online by visiting the State Department’s official website. Alternatively, you can call the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) and schedule your appointment at your nearest passport agency by phone.
